About Stephen Power
Hello, I'm Stephen Power, an award-winning photographer originally from
the UK and happily living in County Kerry, Ireland for the last 20
years.
I have taught photography for the world's largest online diploma course, photographed for newspapers, books, magazines and large international organizations and famous musicians and sporting personalities, among others. I have attained a number of international awards, including the NAPP Guru Award for Excellence in Photoshop, and the Creative Quarterly Award of Excellence. I am proud to be a regular contributor to Cameracraft Magazine, published in Scotland by Icon Publications.
A significant event happened when I was 16 years old and delivering newspapers early one morning in a leafy suburb in my home town. I walked past a house where a man was loading camera equipment and a large clear plastic bag full of film into his car.
We said "hello" and - without asking him anything at all - I decided two things instantaneously: One, He was a professional photographer setting off on an assignment (probably for a well-known magazine); and, two, that was how I wanted to spend my entire working life.
To this day, I have no idea if I guessed his occupation correctly. For all I know, he could have been a camera salesman, or a burglar, or something entirely different. But my conviction that I wanted to spend my life as a professional photographer remained strong and has not left me yet.
That was nearly 40 years ago, and I have spent much of my working lifetime as professional photographer, author and teacher. Sometimes, life was hard and sometimes it was glorious. I have never regretted my career path though.
My blog posts are both new and archival, and they are mainly based on real-life experiences in photography (or just real life) over a long career. Some of my writing is funny and intended to make you smile. Some of it is serious and intended to make you think. Much of it is quirky, personal and anecdotal. All of it is intended to illuminate, educate, enlighten, inspire and/or entertain.
Photography, for me, is everything. It's what I am, rather than what I do. I am also a trained educator (Master's Degree in Education) and experienced writer, magazine associate editor and twice published book author. I love sharing my deep passion for photography through personal teaching, my writing, video presentations and one-to-one or small group workshops.
